Today’s Passage: Galatians 4:1-7

Galatians 4:1-7 (NASB)

Now I say, as long as the heir is a child, he does not differ at all from a slave although he is the owner of everything, but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by the father. So also we, while we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental things of the world. But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.

Understanding the Theme of Christian Adoption

In this passage, the Apostle Paul compares our relationship with God to the concept of adoption. We, as believers, were once held in bondage to the “elemental things of the world.” Likewise, as an heir is under the guidance of guardians until an appointed time. However, through Jesus Christ, God sent His Son to redeem us and invite us into His family as adopted sons and daughters.

Adoption in the biblical context is not just a legal process but a profound spiritual reality. We are no longer slaves, but we are children of God. This adoption grants us the privilege to cry out “Abba! Father!” We can experience an intimate, loving relationship with our Heavenly Father.

By grasping the depth of our adoption, we can overcome feelings of insecurity. We can find our identity in Christ, rooted in God’s unconditional love and acceptance.

A Soul-Searching Example: The Life of a Non-Christian

Picture a man, let’s call him John, who is living apart from God, uncertain of his purpose. John seeks fulfillment and acceptance through worldly pursuits. He is desperately trying to fill the void within his soul. Yet, despite his accomplishments, he feels a deep emptiness.

Without a relationship with God, John is like a child in bondage to the “elemental things of the world.” He lacks the assurance of being loved unconditionally and adopted into God’s family. His life is characterized by restlessness, constant striving, and a perpetual sense of dissatisfaction.

John’s struggle mirrors the reality many non-Christians face. It is an existence marked by spiritual hunger, searching for something more but not quite knowing what it is.

A Christian Example: Embracing Christian Adoption in Our Lives

Now let’s shift our focus to a Christian man, named Matthew. He has embraced the concept of Christian adoption in his life. Matthew recognizes that his identity is not based on worldly achievements or the opinions of others. Instead, he finds his worth and purpose in being a beloved son of God.

Matthew has deepened his understanding of Christian adoption through two key biblical truths. First, he clings to Romans 8:15-16 (NASB), which states, “For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again. But you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, ‘Abba! Father!’. The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God.” This truth gives Matthew the boldness to approach God with confidence. He can surrender his worries and fears.

Secondly, Matthew meditates on Ephesians 1:5 (NASB), which assures him that God “predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will.” This truth reminds Matthew that his adoption into God’s family is part of God’s divine plan and purpose. It gives him peace and assurance, even in the midst of life’s challenges.
