Your Identity: Do You Know Where It Is? (Gal 3:15-22)

Identity In Christ

Seriously, do you know where your identity is found? Do you ever struggle to understand your true identity? Maybe you struggle to figure out your true identity and place in this world. As a Christian, it’s important to understand that our identity is found in Christ. But what does that really mean? Let’s gain insight into the theology of your identity and how it applies to your daily life.

Gal 3:15-22

15 Brethren, I speak in terms of human relations: even though it is only a man’s covenant, yet when it has been ratified, no one sets it aside or adds conditions to it. 16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ.

17 What I am saying is this: the Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise. 18 For if the inheritance is based on law, it is no longer based on a promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by means of a promise.

19 Why the Law then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator, until the seed would come to whom the promise had been made. 20 Now a mediator is not for one party only; whereas God is only one.

21 Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? May it never be! For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law. 22 But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

How I Failed With My Identity

Gotta Get It Right

When I first became a Christian, I struggled like all get out to ‘get it right’. I kept trying in my own strength to ‘get it right’. Yes, I had read Gal 2:20. But I didn’t understand it. And no one I looked up to could explain it adequately.

I Got This

In addition to my striving to ‘get it right’, I didn’t really trust God to do ‘it’ either. Yeah, I trusted Him to save me (a specific act). But I wasn’t trusting Him to continue His good work in me. And yes again, I read Phil 1:6. So why was I getting it all so wrong? Why was I constantly frustrated? One minute, I was doing good. The next minute I was so bad.

Finding Your Identity

In the recent past, men have defined themselves by their careers. From a human perspective, a person’s sense of self comes from how they define their own identity. I can identify as a female Olympic Gold Medalist if I want to, according to the world. But, I am neither female nor an Olympic Gold Medalist. But that’s a lie. It is not ‘popular’ to say this, but it is true. Saying something does not make it the truth.

Clues to Your Identity, In the Covenant

  • God made the covenant with Abraham and thus established your identity.
  • God’s promises to Abraham and his seed, who is Christ, are crucial factors in defining your identity.
  • The addition of the Law later does not invalidate the promises made to Abraham But rather shows your need for Christ and faith in Him.
  • We receive the promise through faith. And thus can live in the fullness of our identity as children of God in Jesus Christ.

Your Identity In Christ

  • Jesus’ birth fulfilled the covenant God made with Abraham.
  • Jesus’ death fulfilled the requirements of the law and enabled us to receive the promise of salvation.
  • Christ’s resurrection provides the way for you to live in the fullness of your identity as a child of God.

Christ Is Your Identity

Now you need to find the purpose Jesus has given you.

  • Realize you have direct access to God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
  • Ask Him when you pray what He wants/expects you to do. He will tell you in time.
  • Live in a relationship with Him. Think about how you would have a long-distance relationship with someone. Then do those types of things; listen for Him, talk to and with Him, and write Him letters (journal).
  • Struggle all you will. But know that you are loved by the Creator of the universe. You cannot escape His love.

Conclusion

Your true identity is found in whose you are. The moment you asked Him into your life as your Lord and Savior, you were identified in Christ. Galatians 3:15-22 provides insight into the theology of our identity and how it applies to our daily lives. You belong to Jesus. The promises made to Abraham and his seed (who is Christ) are yours now. You must understand that this is faith in action. So you can live in the fullness of your identity as a child of God in Jesus Christ.

Many Christians struggle to understand who they truly are and where they fit in this world. But praise God that now you know your true identity! Your identity is not defined by the standards of this world! You are designed to live by God’s promises and your relationship with Jesus Christ. Now, just strive to develop a deeper relationship with God. Ask Him what He wants you to do. Live in obedience to Him. Even when you struggle, remember you are loved by the Creator of the universe who has given you a purpose in life. With this understanding, live confidently and boldly in the fullness of your identity in Christ Then you will fulfill God’s plan for your life.
