The Passage: Galatians 3:23-25
“But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed. Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.”
The Transition from Law to Freedom in Christ
The main idea of this passage is the move from following rules to trusting Jesus. In the Old Testament, people had to obey the law. It taught them about Jesus and how He sets us free. We don’t need the law to teach us about Jesus. But the law is a very good mirror to show us our sinfulness.
This theme is crucial for us as Christians because it reminds us that our salvation and freedom come through faith in Christ alone. We no longer need to strive to earn our righteousness or salvation through legalistic practices. Now we can rest in the finished work of Jesus on the cross.
A Life without Christ
Imagine a life where everything revolves around achieving external measures of success. A life filled with striving, anxiety, and never feeling fully satisfied. This was my reality before encountering Jesus the Christ.
Every day was a battle to fulfill the demands of society, to live up to others’ expectations, and to prove my worth. No matter how much I accomplished, it was never enough. The pressure and emptiness were consuming me.
I vividly remember a moment of deep reflection, feeling utterly exhausted and broken. I realized my pursuit of success and approval was leading me further away from true freedom and fulfillment. I needed to make a change.
This personal struggle is not uncommon. Many find themselves trapped in the cycle of seeking validation from the world. We never feel fully satisfied. But the good news is that there is a way out.
A Life Transformed by Christ
My journey towards freedom began when I encountered Jesus and embraced His grace and love. Through faith, I experienced a radical transformation. I found true freedom in Christ.
First, I surrendered my striving and realized that salvation is a gift. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.” My acceptance of this truth released the burden to perform and allowed me to rest in God’s love.
Second, I embraced my identity in Christ. Galatians 3:26 reminds us, “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” Understanding that I am a child of God gave me a profound sense of worth and purpose that no amount of worldly success could ever provide.
Today, my life is a testimony to the freedom found in Christ. I no longer strive for validation from the world but seek to live out my identity as a beloved child of God. It’s a journey filled with joy, peace, and a deep sense of purpose.
By the way, I still look it the Old Testament law. I do not disgard it as useless. Instead, I ask the Holy Spirit to use it to show me where I fall short. I don’t do that to beat myself up. Now I do it because I want to serve Jesus better and more fully. In an interesting way, doing this helps me see even more freedom in Christ than ever before!
